The Dragon Empire


Long ago the Dwarves were a slave race in bondage to the will of the Great Chromatic Wyrms. Their superior skills at metal craft allowed the many more numerous Dwarves to eventually defeat the Wyrms and their Dragonborn armies. After decades of conflict in a seemingly decisive battle the First Dwarven Emperor defeated the Great Red Wyrm and unified the Clans under his banner.

The High clans

An aggressive, heavily industrialised, but ultimately honourable people – They currently lead a war against the Gnolls of the Underdark. Expansionist but politically conflicted over how to do so. The Nobles of the Clans are not above using the Ninjas of the low clans to assassinate rivals. It is public knowledge that The Emperor (Clan Dragon) is currently missing and this threatens civil war amongst the High clans as the line of succession had not been yet decided upon. When he vanished the Emperor did not leave an heir and has no direct next of kin.

Low clans

A spiritualised culture which is inwardly focussed. Internal conflict between Druids and Clerics over the worship of Nature and the use of metal craft (by the High clans) has always been kept to debating so long as the Druids sacred groves are not disturbed but two prominent rivals an Archdruid & High Priest have come into conflict recently which threatens the long held peace as both control strong factions. In the Great war against the Wyrms whilst the high clans armies fought the armies of the dragonborn the less numerous low clans sent Ninjas to assassinate generals, weaker wyrmlings and disrupt supply lines.


Crafting and Martial prowess is valued most among the High clans whereas Nature and Spiritual focus is among the Low clans. The Low Clans hold that it was their ability as crafters that allowed the Great Wyrms to subjugate them in the first place and that only by looking inwards away from industry to Nature can strength be found if the Wyrms were to ever return. The Dwarves of the High clans are much more pragmatic and believe that strength is from your arm and not your heart.

Laws are strict within the clans and much internal conflict is resolved by contests of skill at arms. Travel is restricted and relationships with other races is often poor particularly due to the Dwarves recent expansionism onto the northernmost parts of Joltan and Visnoth. The remaining Dragonborn hold a particular place of hatred in Dwarven hearts and many of them are enslaved or lifelong servants within Dwarven households or monasteries. Every now and then a Dargonborn may escape and they are particularly loathed. The study of arcane magic is restricted to the Greater clans. Sorcery is looked upon with much disgust because of its link with the draconic.

Clan structures

Each hold fealty to the Greater Clans. Each clan has sub houses within them which provide most of the Dwarven armed forces. Genders are not differentiated within society and a clan is just as likely to be matriarchal as it is patriarchal. Usually the clans name is an extension of the Greater Clan name for example Clan Scale, Clan Claw and Clan Flame owe fealty to Clan Dragon
